About & Policies

Thank you for supporting Friends School of Minnesota and ordering seeds, bulbs, bareroots, and mushrooms online. In order to keep as much shelf space as we can for plants at the 2021 Plant Sale, and building off our success of the 2020 Seed Sale, we are once again selling seeds online this year — and we’ll be selling additional items online for the first time.

This is an official retail component of the 2021 Friends School Plant Sale, a fundraiser for Friends School of Minnesota (an independent, Quaker K-8 school in Saint Paul). For a complete list of all of the plants we’ll be selling this year, including the items we’ll be selling at our in-person sale in May, you can browse our complete list of plants here.

How the online orders work

Seeds will be mailed to you by U.S. Postal Service shortly after we receive your order. We send orders by USPS first-class mail and will make every effort to drop your order off at the Post Office within 3-5 business days. You will receive a tracking number by email once we finish processing your order.

We can send orders to anywhere in the contiguous 48 states plus Washington, DC, including P.O. boxes. Due to cost and agriculture rules, we can’t ship to APO, DPO, or FPO addresses, to territories, Alaska, Hawaii, or internationally.

Everything except seeds will be held for pick up at the in-person Plant Sale at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in May. This is important — because of how everything is timed, you must come in person to collect these items. We’ll email you specific pickup instructions beginning on May 1 after these orders are prepared. You can come anytime during the plant sale to pick up your non-seed items, and you don’t need a reserved shopping time to pick up your order.

If you place multiple orders, we will ship or bag each order separately. However, all of your orders of non-seed items will be available to pick up at the same time, so you will not need to make multiple trips.

Shipping and handling charges

For seeds, we charge flat rates on shipping and handling based on the destination of your seeds.

Orders destined for a Minnesota address are charged $4.99 regardless of order size. Orders to anywhere else within the 48 contiguous states or Washington, DC, are charged a flat $5.99. As a reminder, we cannot ship to the following locations due to cost or agriculture rules:

  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • Territories (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands)
  • APO, DPO, or FPO addresses
  • Internationally

If your order does not contain seeds, or in other circumstances where a shipping charge does not apply, we will ignore any entered shipping address when processing your order, and all applicable items will be held for you to pick up in person at the plant sale in May at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

If your billing address is in any of the above locations where we cannot ship seeds, but you are planning to shop at the Plant Sale, please email us at orders@2021plantsale.com for assistance before you place your order.

Pickup policy for items other than seeds

Items that are not seeds MUST BE PICKED UP IN PERSON at the Plant Sale, May 6 – 8, 2021. These items will not be mailed.

Pickup will be located at curbside plant pickup. You do not need a reserved shopping time to pick up your online order. Enter the Minnesota State Fairgrounds through Gate 15 (Dan Patch & Canfield). If you don’t have a shopping reservation, stay in your vehicle and follow the signs to curbside plant pickup. If you do have a shopping reservation, you can pick up your order immediately after you shop for other plants.

Pickup hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6 through Saturday, May 8. Volunteers can pick up their orders during the volunteer pre-sale; specific instructions and hours will be emailed to volunteers in early May.

Cancellations, returns, and exchanges

Please carefully review your order before placing it! Because we have a team of volunteers fulfilling orders, we can’t modify orders after they are placed.

If you need to cancel an order that contains seeds, email orders@2021plantsale.com as soon as possible, and we will do our best to stop your order before it gets packed. We can’t cancel a seed order once a shipping label is generated. Non-seed items, regardless of if they’re ordered alongside or separately from seeds, can be cancelled until noon on Thursday, April 29.

If you order seeds, volunteers will make every effort to pack your order correctly. If we miss something that you ordered, please contact us at orders@2021plantsale.com right away so that we can fix the problem.

Bulb orders will be fulfilled to the best of our ability. As sometimes happens at the regular plant sale, there may be crop failures on some of the bulbs, bareroots, or tubers. Because we won’t know about these crop failures until after the online store closes, we will ask you what to do if one of your non-seed items is a full or partial crop failure, or if other circumstances arise that prevent us from fulfilling that item. You may have us refund the affected item(s), donate the money to Friends School, or contact you about a substituion if there is one available. You may also change your selection by emailing orders@2021plantsale.com by noon on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Friends School Plant Sale does not accept returns or exchanges after shipping or pickup — all sales are final. However, we are interested in hearing about how your plants do. This information helps us better curate our seed and plant selections in future years. Send comments to info@friendsschoolplantsale.com.

Inventory, restocking, etc

Because of high demand for these seeds and bulbs this year at our suppliers, we are unable to restock any items that sell out. The inventory that we’ve published is all that we have. Once a product disappears, that means it is sold out.

Donating to Friends School

Because the plant sale is a fundraiser for Friends School of Minnesota, you may add a donation to your order that goes directly to Friends School.

Unfortunately we do not have an easy method to select a whole dollar amount to “round up” your total to. If you would like to “round up” your total, you will need to do the math yourself. We recommend entering these types of donation amounts on the final checkout page if you want to account for taxes.

Donations to Friends School are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Other purchases ARE NOT deductible. Please consult a professional tax preparer or advisor for more details specific to your situation.

Why there is sales tax on your order

Even though this sale is operated by a nonprofit, we are required to charge sales tax on all bulb orders and all seed orders shipped to a Minnesota address. We may need to charge sales tax for orders bound for other states too.

Sales tax law is complex and varies dramatically by state. We have to charge sales tax because:

  • These items are being sold to end consumers (i.e. not other businesses),
  • Minnesota’s sales tax exemption for basic food (like what you get at the grocery store) does not apply to seeds,
  • Even though this is a fundraiser, we’ll be accepting orders for nearly two months, and
  • For bulb orders, the “shipping” address is the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, which has special rules.
